Ken Cooksey forwarded the following information about the plans for Buddy's interment and celebration of his life:
The government finally gave it's blessing and Bud is now scheduled to be interred at Miramar National Cemetery July 14, at 1330 (that's 1:30 PM for navy and army types). Allow plenty of time to get there. The staging area for the car procession is by the administration building. It leaves promptly at 1330 and goes to the presentation area. Car pool if you can. The total ceremony is limited to thirty minutes.
There will be a celebration of Buddy's life after the service--time and place to be determined. Additional information will be posted as it's received.
When I think of Buddy, I think of his great smile and twinkling eyes. Buddy was my junior prom date AND I think that was the first time I was "allowed" to go on a date in a car with a boy. I can see him standing in my parent's living room with an orchid corsage and a white jacket. What great memories! He was a sweet guy and it saddens me that he has passed. Rest in peace old friend.
Just thought I'd add a post-script after reading the earlier comments:
Buddy and I shared the experience of being US Marines. He earned his Naval Aviator wings in the MARCAD program (Enlisted-to-aviation-officer). We reconnected in Beaufort, SC in 1968. He was newly-commisioned and I was a Sgt. back from Nam waiting to be a civilian again.
He was a maniacal F-4 Phantom pilot and just wanted to go to Nam and shoot down MiGs. Nothing I said persuaded him that it wasn't going to be like that over there.
We didn't get to spend much time together at the base (MCAS Beaufort) because as a 2ndLt., he got all the s**t duty (e.g. Savings Bond Officer), but I've always cherished the time we did have before I left. RIP, Buddy.
